Last Wednesday evening during a group meeting in my home we discussed the Apostle Paul’s teaching relating to the immature Corinthian church. In chapter 3 of his first letter to that church he encourages his readers to ensure that they build their lives on the foundation of Jesus Christ. Wise words indeed, and equally applicable to every individual today who claims to have been ransomed with the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
With all the political turmoil being experienced in Great Britain at present; following on from the 2016 referendum in which the electorate voted by a majority to leave the European Union. There has been a sustained, vitriolic, fear-based campaign – lavishly funded by those who wish to overturn the democratic outcome of the referendum either by halting Britain’s exit from the EU or at least reducing this once mighty nation to a vassal entity within the European Union, stripped of her power of veto and a place at the negotiating table whilst still being subject to EU law and customs treaties.
I have to say that in my 61 years of life in Britain I have never seen such political deviousness, hypocrisy and duplicity from those in political office. It probably was always thus, but it has taken this particular issue to bring the rats out of the sewers. (I hope that doesn’t sound too pejorative?)
In line with this quest, a few weeks ago I was sent a copy of a book with the title “The Trumpet Sounds for Britain”. It arrived by Royal Mail in a package without any letter or note, or any clue as to who the sender was. I enquired at the sorting office as to where the packet was posted, and was advised that it was from Aberdeen in Scotland. Having spent many weeks in Aberdeen working with local churches during the first half of this decade, and having also sold or given many copies of this of this particular book to Christians in the city, I was none the wiser. Confused and admittedly perplexed in receiving this anonymous gift, I prayed and asked the Lord what I should do about it? I immediately felt a distinct impression in my spirit that I should read the book again it being several years since I last did so. In light of this crisis in our national life, I am greatly concerned to discover if Britain still has a remnant of divine favour remaining over its affairs and destiny?
The Trumpet Sounds For Britain is a compendium of 3 volumes providing an account of the Christian history of Britain back to the day of Pentecost 10 days after the ascension of Jesus Christ into Heaven. The author David E Gardner, explains how Britain was repeatedly delivered from its enemies both within and without. The Viking invasion, the Spanish Armada, the plot of Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators to destroy the Houses of Parliament during the reign of James 1st, and more recently we have the rescue of British soldiers from Dunkirk and the defeat of Nazism against all the odds during the Second World War.
Despite the injunction of Prime Minister Winston Churchill at the end of World War 2 that the members of both Houses of Parliament retire to the chapel of Saint Mary Undercroft to thank Almighty God for his great deliverance; and the Christian leaders in Britain urging their congregations to seek God’s face for divine guidance in taking the country forward through its post-war recovery, very soon afterwards Britain began the process of sinking into the incredible depths of moral depravity in which we find ourselves today.
Mankind has and will always commit wicked acts and of course we have laws in place to provide redress and justice for the perpetrators. However, when a government introduces and legislates laws which fly in the face of God’s commandments, then the crime is far more serious and the repercussions far more grave.
If you have read this, far I guess that you will either be nodding your head in agreement at my assertions or be bemused that I could suggest that a moral and spiritual problem exists in Britain at all. But as the title of the post states: If the foundations [of a nation] are destroyed, what can the righteous [those who are in a relationship with Almighty God through His Son Jesus Christ] do about it. I would suggest – not a lot. But in order to end on a high note, Jesus provided the antidote:- Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26.
Just a quick note, John (it’s Marc Dunn here). I want to firstly, thank you very, very much for being such a loyal and faithful friend over the past thirty or forty years: You are, truly, a light in the dark. Bless you, always, Marc
P. S. The insights you are presenting now are full of wisdom and hope – bless your for courage!
Steady there Marc, It’s only about 34 years. You’ll give my ‘vast following’ of Facebook friends the impression that I’m older than I am. But thank you for your kind comments, I’m very appreciative. KIngdom blessings, John
